❖ Question

What does Imām al-Bukhārī mean by the phrase “Qāla Baʿḍu al-Nās” in his book Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

When Imām al-Bukhārī (raḥimahu Allāh) uses the phrase “baʿḍu al-nās” in his book, he truly intends “some people.” That is:

◄ When Imām al-Bukhārī writes “qāla baʿḍu al-nās”, the statement that follows is attributed to this group.
◄ Whoever holds that statement or opinion, all of them are considered by Imām al-Bukhārī to fall under the term “baʿḍu al-nās.”

Therefore, the phrase “baʿḍu al-nās” refers to all those individuals who adopt or support that statement or view.
