Meaning and Validity of the Phrase “جل من لا يسهو”

◈ The Question

Is it incorrect to say the phrase “جل من لا يسهو” (Exalted is the One who never forgets)?
Some people object to its usage—what is the correct view?

◈ The Scholarly Response

No, the phrase “جل من لا يسهو” is correct and valid in both meaning and usage.

This expression acknowledges two key theological truths:
① It attributes forgetfulness (sahw) to created beings, such as humans, who are by nature prone to error and forgetfulness, regardless of their piety or status.
② It declares Allah's perfection, affirming that He is exalted above forgetfulness and error, as indicated by the word “جلّ” (Exalted is He).

Explanation and Implication

This phrase indirectly conveys that human beings are excused for their forgetfulness, including prophets, righteous people, and saints. Forgetfulness is part of human nature, and Islam provides allowances for it. At the same time, the phrase glorifies Allah’s absolute perfection, who never forgets nor errs.

◈ Conclusion by the Scholars

Shaykh ‘Abdul Razzaq ‘Afifi (رحمه الله) affirmed the correctness of the phrase and rejected the criticism leveled against it. He clarified that it is consistent with Islamic belief in the imperfection of creation and the perfection of the Creator.
