❀ What is Masturbation?

Masturbation (Istimnāʾ bil-Yad) is a sinful act in which a person gratifies his sexual desire by using his own hand. This practice is against Sharīʿah and is forbidden and ḥarām in Islam.

❀ Prohibition in the Light of the Qur’ān

Allah Taʿālā says:

﴿فَمَنِ ٱبۡتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡعَادُونَ﴾
(Al-Muʾminūn: 7)

“Then whoever seeks beyond that — it is they who are the transgressors.”

In this verse, Allah has declared that any means of fulfilling sexual desire apart from nikāḥ is transgression. This includes masturbation as well.

❀ Punishment on the Day of Judgment

Whoever continues this evil act without repentance will be counted among the sinners in the sight of Allah on the Day of Judgment. Those who violate the limits set by Allah are threatened with His punishment. Therefore, avoiding masturbation and seeking Allah’s forgiveness is essential.

❀ Sharʿī Ways to Avoid This Evil Act

Regularly recite this duʿāʾ:
«اَللّٰهُمَّ مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوْبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِیْ عَلٰی طَاعَتِکَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Jāmiʿ Tirmidhī)

This supplication helps the heart remain firm upon Allah’s obedience, protecting a person from sins.

Also recite this duʿāʾ frequently:
«اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّیْ أَعُوْذُ بِکَ مِنَ الْمَاثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ»

This duʿāʾ seeks Allah’s protection from sins and burdens of debt, which can safeguard a person from sinful acts.

❀ Conclusion

✿ Masturbation is a ḥarām act in Islam and a form of transgression.
✿ If one persists without repentance, he risks punishment in the Hereafter.
✿ True salvation lies in seeking forgiveness, maintaining firm resolve to avoid sin, and adopting spiritual remedies such as duʿāʾ and distancing oneself from causes of temptation.
