"عن عبداللہ بن عباس- وذکر الحدیث ، وفیہ- ثم قبض قبضۃ من الماء ثم نفض یدہ ثم مسح بھا رأسہ وأذنیہ…..إلخ”
Narrated by Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): ... then he took a handful of water, poured it, and then wiped his head and his ears ... etc. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this from the Prophet (ﷺ)
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 1/20 al-Mujtaba: Hadith 137).
Its chain of narration is Hasan. Imam Hakim also narrated it in his Mustadrak (1/147). Additionally, there are numerous evidences in other Hadith books.
Benefits:
This Hadith indicates that one should also perform Masah (wiping) of the ears along with the head.
Authentic and Hasan Hadiths mention wiping the head and ears, but there is no mention of wiping the neck.
In al-Talkhees al-Habeer (Vol. 1, p. 93, Hadith 98), it is narrated without a chain from Abu al-Husayn Ibn Fares's collection from Faleeh bin Sulaiman from Nafi from Ibn Umar: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Whoever performs wudu and wipes his neck with his hands will be protected from the collar on the Day of Judgment." Although Ibn Fares said:
"This is, God willing, a Sahih Hadith," Hafiz Ibn Hajar refuted this by stating: "Between Ibn Fares and Faleeh is a desert, so it should be looked into."
Muhammad Ilyas, the author of "Chalis Hadeesain," falsely claimed that "Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared this Hadith Sahih in al-Talkhees al-Habeer."
Muhammad Ilyas also falsely claimed that "Allama Shawkani in Nail al-Awtar similarly declared it (Sahih)" (Chalis Hadeesain, p. 6). However, there is criticism of this in Nail al-Awtar (Vol. 1, p. 164, Beirut edition).
The Prophet (ﷺ) performed Masah on the turban (Sahih Bukhari Vol. 1, p. 33, Hadith 205). Contrary to this, al-Hidaya (Vol. 1, p. 44) states that wiping over the turban is not permissible (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un). This fatwa of al-Hidaya is rejected when compared to the Sahih Hadith of the Prophet (ﷺ) in Sahih Bukhari.
