📌 The Prohibition of Marriage in the State of Iḥrām

It is authentically reported from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Lā yankih al-muḥrim, wa lā yunkah, wa lā yukhṭib"
“A person in the state of Iḥrām should neither perform a marriage contract (for himself), nor conduct it on behalf of someone else, nor should he propose marriage.”

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 2522, Kitāb al-Nikāḥ: Bāb Taḥrīm Nikāḥ al-Muḥrim]
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl: 1888]

🛑 Key Ruling:

❖ A person who is in iḥrām—whether for Ḥajj or ʿUmrah—is under specific sacred restrictions.

❖ One of these prohibitions is related to Nikāḥ (marriage):

① He cannot marry himself (i.e., conduct his own marriage).
② He cannot perform nikāḥ on behalf of anyone else (e.g., as a wakīl or representative).
③ He cannot send a marriage proposal (khiṭbah).

✅ Ruling’s Basis:

This prohibition is derived from:

  • Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (2522) – An authentic narration.
  • Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl (1888) – Authenticated by Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله.

💡 Summary:

➤ Any involvement in marriage contracts or proposals is prohibited during the state of iḥrām.
➤ This ruling applies regardless of whether the person is performing Ḥajj or ʿUmrah.
