Marriage, Divorce, Reconciliation, and Martyrdom of ʿAbdullāh bin Abū Bakr (رضي الله عنهما)

Authored by: Ḥāfiẓ Muḥammad Anwar Zāhid حفظه الله

❀ The Marriage:

ʿAbdullāh bin Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (رضي الله عنهما) married ʿĀtikah bint Zayd bin ʿAmr bin Nufayl, a woman known for her beauty, grace, and noble character.

However, after marriage, ʿAbdullāh gradually began to lose interest in martyrdom and the fervor of jihād. Witnessing this, his father, Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq (رضي الله عنه), ordered him to divorce her, stating that she had distracted him from the path of jihād. The son obeyed and issued the divorce.

✿ The Regret:

One day, as Abū Bakr (رضي الله عنه) passed by him, he heard ʿAbdullāh reciting the following verses:

«فلم أر مثلي طلق اليوم مثلها ولا مثلها فى غير ذنب تلطق»
"I have not seen anyone like myself today who has divorced a woman like her; nor have I seen someone like her being divorced without any fault."

«لها خلق جزل وراي و منصب علي كبر مني و اني لوامق !»
"She is of excellent character, wise in counsel, and of high status. Though older than me in age, I am passionately in love with her."

On hearing this, Abū Bakr (رضي الله عنه) was deeply moved and allowed him to take her back (رجعت).

✔ Participation in Battle and Martyrdom:

After this reconciliation, ʿAbdullāh participated alongside the Prophet (ﷺ) in the Battle of Ṭā’if. During the battle, he was struck by an arrow, and he eventually succumbed to the wound. He passed away in Madīnah al-Munawwarah.

📌 Ḥadīth Authentication:

Its chain is weak (اسنادہ ضعیف).
