Marriage After Breastfeeding from Grandmother: Is It Allowed in Islam?

Ruling on Marriage After Breastfeeding from Grandmother – Sharʿī Clarification

📚 Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, Pg. 740

❖ Question:

If a grandson has breastfed from his paternal grandmother (dādī),
is it permissible to arrange his marriage with the daughter of his paternal uncle (chāchā) or paternal aunt (phūphī)?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:

If the grandson breastfed five times from his grandmother, meaning he suckled in five separate nursing sessions, then the following rulings apply:

❖ Legal Consequence:

◈ He becomes the milk-brother (raḍāʿī brother) of his uncles (chāchās) and aunts (phūphīs),
◈ Therefore:

✔ He becomes the milk-uncle to his uncle’s daughter,
✔ And becomes the milk-maternal uncle to his aunt’s daughter.

❖ Sharʿī Ruling:

As a result:

❌ Marriage is not permissible between the grandson and the daughters of his chāchā or phūphī,
if he has breastfed five or more times from his dādī.

Because the ruling of fosterage (riḍāʿah) equates to lineage (nasab) in terms of prohibiting marriage.

✅ Final Verdict:

If the grandson breastfed five times from his grandmother,
He becomes a foster son to her,
Foster brother to her children,
➡ Hence, a foster uncle to their children,
➡ Thus, he cannot marry his cousin (uncle or aunt’s daughter).
