❀ Making Up Missed Fasts of Ramaḍān: Consecutive or Separate? ❀
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
✔ Both methods are valid, whether one chooses to fast consecutively or on separate days.
➊ ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما said:
"There is no harm in separating the make-up fasts", based on the verse:
فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
“…then (make up) the number from other days.”
[Al-Baqarah: 184]
[Bukhārī, comment before ḥadīth no. 1950]
➋ ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated that:
The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the make-up of Ramaḍān fasts. He replied:
"If he wants, he may separate them; if he wants, he may do them consecutively."
*[Ḍaʿīf (Weak): Tamām al-Minnah: p. 423; Dārquṭnī: 2/193; Ibn al-Jawzī: 2/99; al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar declared its chain weak — Talkhīṣ al-Ḥabīr: 2/394]
✧ Though this narration is weak, it agrees with the general wording of the Qur'anic verse فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ, which does not require consecutiveness. Thus, either method is valid.
⚠ The narration that states:
"Whoever has fasts of Ramaḍān to make up should fast them consecutively and not separate them" is also weak.
[Ḍaʿīf: Tamām al-Minnah: p. 424; Dārquṭnī: 2/191]
✔ Whether one makes up missed Ramaḍān fasts consecutively or separately, both are correct.
✔ The goal is to complete the required number, not necessarily to do so in sequence.
