Making Duʿāʾ for Others in Their Absence

Authored by: Fadhilat al-Shaykh Hafiz Abdul Sattar Hammad (may Allah preserve him)

✦ The Power of a Hidden Prayer ✦

دَعْوَةُ الْمَرْءِ الْمُسْلِمِ لِأَخِيهِ بِظَهْرِ الْغَيْبِ مُسْتَجَابَةٌ
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 6929]

"The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is accepted."

✦ Benefits ✦

Narrated by Ṣafwān ibn ʿAbdullāh:
He visited Abū al-Dardāʾ (رضي الله عنه) in Shām (Syria), but he was not home. His wife, Umm al-Dardāʾ (رضي الله عنها), welcomed him and asked, "Are you planning to perform Hajj this year?"
He replied, "Yes."
She then said, "Pray for our well-being and goodness there," and quoted the above ḥadīth.

She explained that when a Muslim makes duʿāʾ for his brother in his absence, an angel appointed for this task responds:
"Āmīn! And may you be granted the same as you ask for your brother."
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Dhikr wa al-Duʿāʾ: 2733]

✦ Why These Prayers Are So Special ✦

❖ Such prayers are filled with sincerity and selflessness, free from any worldly flattery or personal gain.
❖ The purity of intention makes these duʿās especially blessed and accepted.

✦ A Noble Example from Sayyidunā ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) ✦

Sayyidunā ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) once sought permission from the Prophet ﷺ to perform ʿUmrah. The Prophet ﷺ granted him permission and said:
"O my brother, include us in your duʿās and don’t forget us."

ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) said:
"This statement made me so happy that if I were to be given the whole world in exchange, I would not trade it."
[Abū Dāwūd, al-Witr: 1498]
