Allah ﷻ says:
Translation:
"And they (Hārūt and Mārūt) would not teach anyone until they had said, ‘We are only a trial, so do not disbelieve.’ Yet they learned from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. And they certainly knew that whoever purchased it would have no share in the Hereafter."
Ruling
- Using magic to create affection between husband and wife is ḥarām and absolutely impermissible. This is called ʿAṭf in Islamic terminology.
- Using magic to cause separation between husband and wife is also ḥarām. This is called Ṣarf.
- Both are forbidden in Sharīʿah and, in some cases, can reach the level of kufr (disbelief) and shirk (polytheism).
