Loud Dhikr in the Mosque and the Hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه)

Imam Abu Muhammad Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman bin Fadl bin Bahram Al-Darimi (رحمه الله) (d. 255 AH) stated:

"Akhbarana Al-Hakam bin Al-Mubarak: Anbana Amr bin Yahya said: I heard my father narrate from his father who said:
We used to sit at the door of Abdullah bin Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) before the Fajr prayer. When he would come out, we would walk with him to the mosque. Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) came to us and asked, ‘Has Abu Abdur Rahman (Ibn Mas'ud) come out to you?’
We replied, ‘Not yet.’ So he sat with us until Ibn Mas'ud came out. When he came out, we all rose and went to him.
Abu Musa said to him, ‘O Abu Abdur Rahman! I have just seen something in the mosque which I disliked, but, praise be to Allah, I only saw good.’
Ibn Mas'ud asked, ‘What was it?’
He said, ‘If you live, you will see it.’
He continued: ‘In the mosque, I saw some people sitting in circles awaiting the prayer. In each circle, there was a man, and they had pebbles in their hands. He would say: "Say Allahu Akbar one hundred times," so they would say it a hundred times. Then he would say: "Say La ilaha illallah one hundred times," and they would do so. Then he would say: "Say Subhanallah one hundred times," and they would comply.’
Ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه) asked, ‘What did you say to them?’
Abu Musa replied, ‘I did not say anything to them, awaiting your opinion or your command.’
Ibn Mas'ud said, ‘Why did you not command them to count their sins, and guarantee them that none of their good deeds would be lost?’
Then he walked, and we walked with him, until he came to one of those circles. He stood over them and said, ‘What is this that I see you doing?’
They replied, ‘O Abu Abdur Rahman, we are counting the Takbir, Tahlil, and Tasbih on pebbles.’
He said, ‘Count your sins instead, for I guarantee that none of your good deeds will be lost.
Woe to you, O Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ)! How swiftly you are headed towards destruction!
The companions of your Prophet (ﷺ) are still many; his garments have not yet worn out and his vessels are still unbroken.
By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! Either you are on a guidance better than that of Muhammad (ﷺ), or you are opening a door of misguidance!’
They said, ‘By Allah, O Abu Abdur Rahman, we intended only good.’
He said, ‘How many are those who intend good but never attain it! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told us that there will be people who recite the Quran and it does not go beyond their throats.
By Allah! I do not know, maybe most of them are among you.’
Then he turned away from them.
Amr bin Salamah said, ‘We saw most of those people fighting against us at the battle of Nahrawan with the Khawarij.’"

Brief Mention and Authentication of the Narrators:

❀ Abu Salih Al-Hakam bin Al-Mubarak Al-Bahili Al-Balkhi Al-Khawashti (رحمه الله)
According to available knowledge:

➊ Hafiz Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Kitab al-Thiqat (8/195).

➋ Imam Tirmidhi said regarding a unique and weak narration reported by him:
هذا حديث حسن غريب
(Hadith 2238, Chapter on the Signs of the Emergence of the Dajjal)

➌ Yaqut bin Abdullah Al-Hamawi said:
"He was trustworthy."
(Mu'jam al-Buldan 2/338)

➍ Hafiz Dhahabi said:
"Trustworthy."
(Al-Kashif 1/183, No. 1198)

➎ Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani said:
"Truthful, though he sometimes erred."
(Taqrib al-Tahdhib, No. 1358)

➏ Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Manda said:
"One of the trustworthy ones."
(Fath al-Bab fi al-Kuna wal-Alqab, p. 433, No. 3928)

Note:
Although Ibn Adi accused him of "theft of hadith" (sarqat al-hadith), he later indicated that Hakam bin Al-Mubarak was acceptable (la ba'sa bihi), and thus the earlier criticism is either canceled or outweighed by the majority’s authentication.

Conclusion of Verification:
Hakam bin Al-Mubarak is truthful and Hasan in Hadith according to the majority.

❀ Amr bin Yahya (رحمه الله)
Clarification:

In some versions of Sunan Al-Darimi, it is incorrectly written as "Umar bin Yahya," but the correct version, as confirmed by Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, is Amr bin Yahya.
  • Imam Yahya bin Ma'in said: "Righteous" (Kitab al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil 6/269).
  • Ibn Hibban included him in Kitab al-Thiqat (8/480).

Conclusion:
Amr bin Yahya is a trustworthy, Hasan al-Hadith narrator.

❀ Yahya bin Amr bin Salamah Al-Hamdani
  • Imam Ajli said: "Reliable" (Al-Tarikh 1990).
  • Shu'bah narrated from him, and Shu'bah generally narrated only from trustworthy narrators.

Conclusion:
Yahya bin Amr bin Salamah is trustworthy and reliable.

❀ Amr bin Salamah bin Kharab Al-Hamdani Al-Kufi Al-Kindi
  • Described as "Trustworthy" (Taqrib al-Tahdhib, No. 5041).

Conclusion of Research

The chain of narration (Isnad) presented by Imam Al-Darimi is Hasan Lidhatihi (good in itself).
The jurist Ibn Abidin Al-Shami has authenticated this narration using the following words:
لما صح عن ابن مسعود أنه أخرج جماعة من المسجد يهللون
(Radd al-Muhtar, 5/281-282, Chapter on Istibra')

Similarly, Sarfaraz Khan Safdar Deobandi wrote:
"I say: with a Sahih Isnad."
(Rah-e-Sunnat, p. 133, 9th edition, 1975)

Supporting Witnesses (Shawahid) for This Narration:

Several other narrations support this Hadith, although they vary in strength. Overall, with their support, the narration is Sahih Lighayrihi (authentic due to supporting evidence).

Final Note

The religion of the Barelvis is based on weak and fabricated narrations. Even by their principles, this narration is valid through five chains, qualifying as Hasan Lighayrihi or Sahih Lighayrihi, and thus is a reliable evidence.
