Limit of Voluntary Acts of Worship: Are More Nawāfil than the Prophetic Practice Allowed?
Question
In the matter of daily and nightly voluntary acts of worship (nawāfil), can a person pray as many as he wishes, or should he only perform the number that is authentically proven from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Is it impermissible to perform more than that? Kindly clarify.
✔ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa-ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
The number of voluntary acts of worship established from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ should be followed. Exceeding the fixed number established by the Sunnah is not appropriate.
For correct understanding of this issue, one should refer to Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ, Kitāb al-Īmān, Bāb al-Iʿtiṣām bi-l-Kitāb wa-l-Sunnah, where the hadiths of Anas (رضي الله عنه) and ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) are recorded.
The Ḥadith
عَنْ اَنَسٍ...
Three men came to the houses of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ inquiring about his acts of worship. When they were informed about them, they considered them little.
They said:
- One of them: “I will pray the entire night without sleep.”
- The second: “I will fast continuously and never break it.”
- The third: “I will abstain from women and never marry.”
Then the Prophet ﷺ came to them and said:
"Are you the ones who said such and such? By Allah, I am the most fearful of Allah among you and the most God-conscious. Yet I fast and I break my fast, I pray and I sleep, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me."
