Liberalism and Atheism: An Existential Threat to Islamic Faith

◈ Liberalism and Atheism: An Ideological Threat to the Muslim Ummah ◈

❀ Liberalism and Atheism: Two Ideological Allies ❀

There exists a deep and mutually reinforcing relationship between liberalism and atheism, often described as “ideological facilitation”. These two ideologies advance side by side, much like two riders in one boat, sharing both destination and eventual consequences.

Liberalism serves as the precursor, while atheism emerges as the ultimate outcome. Liberalism prepares the ground, and atheism swiftly takes hold of the cleared path, especially in faith-based societies.

❀ Liberalism Prepares the Ground, Atheism Claims the Ground ❀

Liberalism creates ideological voids in society—spaces that atheism quickly fills.
✔ Our educational institutions are the most affected, where young minds, once exposed to liberal values, drift toward atheism.
✔ This ideological shift is no longer hidden—it unfolds openly, yet many remain unaware of the creeping danger.

❀ Key Points Linking Liberalism and Atheism ❀

✔ Liberalism and atheism operate on different levels of a shared agenda.
✔ Both have multiple variants—for instance, atheism is not limited to the denial of God's existence.
✔ Some religious circles mistakenly view them as separate, failing to grasp their inherent interconnection.

❀ “Godless Liberalism”? A Delusion or Deception? ❀

The notion of a "God-neutral liberalism" is either naïve thinking or the result of clever liberal marketing.

✔ Those who claim liberalism does not conflict with religion overlook its true objective: to liberate society from the grip of religion.
✔ Anyone who believes in the obligation of obeying Allah and His Messenger ﷺ can never fully accept the core tenets of liberalism.

❀ Softness for Misguided Muslims, Not for Committed Liberals ❀

Those who, out of misunderstanding, support liberalism yet maintain their fundamental Islamic beliefs, may be excused under the Sunni principle:

“Lāzim al-qawl laysa bi-qawl”The necessary implication of a belief is not the belief itself.

However, those liberals who openly reject the obedience of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the authority of Islamic Shari‘ah do not deserve any leniency.

❀ Liberalism vs. Islamic Law: A Hidden Battle ❀

It is incorrect to claim that liberalism only opposes the forced imposition of religion.

✔ In reality, liberals oppose any law derived from Islam, even if supported by majority consensus.
✔ In Pakistan, liberals consistently resist laws rooted in Islamic teachings, and as soon as implementation is attempted, they immediately react with opposition.

❀ Liberalism and Selective Use of State and Majority Will ❀

Liberals refer to “state authority” and “majority will” only when it supports their agenda.

✔ Their ideal state is one free from religion, where laws are based not on divine guidance, but on human desires.

❀ The True Goal of Liberalism: Freedom from Divine Authority ❀

At its core, liberalism seeks to free man and the state from the obedience of God.

✔ Any legal system derived from divine instruction is inherently unacceptable in liberalism’s framework.

✔ Conclusion: Liberalism, Atheism, and the Ummah’s Responsibility

To ignore the true nature of liberalism and its natural progression into atheism is a grave risk for the Muslim Ummah.

We must:

Intellectually refute these ideologies
Safeguard our educational institutions
Counteract their influence in media and communication platforms

Only through conscious, informed resistance can the Ummah preserve its faith, identity, and future generations.
