Leaving the Nearby Mosque to Pray in Another Mosque – Sharʿī Ruling

Source: Ahkam wa Masā’il – The Chapter of Mosques, Vol. 1, p. 102

❖ The Question

Is it permissible to leave the nearby mosque and pray in another mosque instead?

❖ The Answer

Alhamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!

Yes, it is permissible to leave the nearby mosque and offer prayer in another mosque.

The evidence is found in the practice of the Companions (RA). At times, instead of praying in their local mosques, they would go and pray in Masjid al-Nabawi.

This is clear proof that if someone leaves the nearby mosque for a religious purpose or to pray in a mosque of greater virtue (such as Masjid al-Nabawi), there is no harm in doing so.

❖ Conclusion

Praying in another mosque instead of the closest one is permissible, especially if done for a valid reason such as seeking greater virtue or benefit.
