Leadership of an Unwanted Imam and the Congregation's Responsibility

✍️ Referenced from: Fatawa ‘Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Vol. 1, p. 198

❖ Question

Zaid, the custodian of a mosque, has appointed ‘Amr—a young and unsuitable relative—as Imam. The congregation is displeased with the Imam, but due to Zaid’s influence and financial control, they continue praying behind him reluctantly. Is it valid to offer Salah behind such an Imam, and is this appointment Islamically sound?

❖ Answer

Two key Hadiths address this issue:

➤ The Prophet ﷺ said:
“If you wish for your prayers to be accepted, appoint the best among you as your Imam.”
(Reported by al-Tabarani)

➤ Another Hadith states:

“Three people’s prayers do not go beyond their ears…” One of them is:
“…a man leading a people in prayer while they dislike him.”
(Reported by al-Tirmidhi)

❖ Implications

  • An Imam disliked by the congregation due to his incompetence or personal flaws undermines the spirit and harmony of the prayer.
  • The custodian (mutawalli) is responsible for acting in the community’s interest, and should consider re-evaluating the appointment.
  • The matter of Imamat involves sincerity, piety, and the community’s respect.

Thus, while the prayer may technically be valid, such an appointment is not ideal, and the situation should be addressed responsibly.
