Is Laylat al-Qadr on the Same Night Every Year?
(Excerpt: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam)
Is it established that Laylat al-Qadr occurs on the same specific night every year, or does this night change to different dates in different years?
Alḥamdulillāh, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah.
There is no doubt that Laylat al-Qadr is one of the nights of Ramadan, as Allah ﷻ says in the Noble Qur’an:
﴿إِنّا أَنزَلنـهُ فى لَيلَةِ القَدرِ﴾
Surah al-Qadr
"Indeed, We sent it [the Qur’an] down during the Night of Decree."
Likewise, in another verse, Allah ﷻ states that the Qur’an was revealed in the month of Ramadan:
﴿شَهرُ رَمَضانَ الَّذى أُنزِلَ فيهِ القُرءانُ﴾
Surah al-Baqarah: 185
"The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’an was revealed."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ first performed iʿtikāf in the first ten days of Ramadan seeking Laylat al-Qadr, then in the middle ten, and later in the last ten days. He ﷺ found it in the last ten nights.
The Companions رضي الله عنهم also repeatedly saw in their dreams that Laylat al-Qadr was among the last seven nights of Ramadan. Upon this, the Prophet ﷺ said:
«أَرَی رُؤْيَاکُمْ قَدْ تَوَاطَأَتْ فِی الْسبعِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فَمَنْ کَانَ مُتَحَرِّيهَا فَلْيَتَحَرَّهَا فی السبعَ ِ الْأَوَاخِرِ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Fadhl Laylat al-Qadr, Bāb al-Tamās Laylat al-Qadr, Ḥadīth: 2015; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Ṣiyām, Bāb Fadhl Laylat al-Qadr, Ḥadīth: 1165)
"I see that your dreams have agreed that it is among the last seven nights, so whoever seeks it should seek it in the last seven nights."
This ḥadīth indicates that Laylat al-Qadr can be on any of the last seven nights of Ramadan.
Upon considering all the evidence, it becomes clear that Laylat al-Qadr is not fixed on one particular night every year, but rather, it can occur on different nights from year to year.
The Prophet ﷺ saw in a dream that he would prostrate on the morning after Laylat al-Qadr in mud and water, and that night happened to be the twenty-first of Ramadan.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
«تَحَرَّوْا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِیَ الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Fadhl Laylat al-Qadr, Bāb Taḥarrī Laylat al-Qadr fī al-Witr min al-ʿAshr al-Awākhir, Ḥadīth: 2017)
"Seek Laylat al-Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan."
This clarifies that Laylat al-Qadr is not tied to one specific date, but should be sought on different nights of the last ten.
If we combine all these aḥādīth, we find that a believer should hope for Laylat al-Qadr every night of the last ten. Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr with faith and expectation of reward will receive it — whether or not he knows it is Laylat al-Qadr.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«مَنْ قامْ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ إِيمَانًا وَاِحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, al-Ṣawm, Bāb Man Ṣāma Ramaḍān Īmānan wa Iḥtisāban, Ḥadīth: 1901; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ṣalāt al-Musāfirīn, Bāb al-Targhīb fī Qiyām Ramaḍān, Ḥadīth: 760)
"Whoever stands (in prayer) on Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and in hope of reward, his past sins will be forgiven."
This shows that to obtain the reward of Laylat al-Qadr, one does not need certainty that it is that very night. If someone prays every night of the last ten, they will certainly receive the reward — whether it occurred at the beginning, middle, or end of the ten nights.
Allah knows best.

The Practical Guidance of the Prophet ﷺ:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ first performed iʿtikāf in the first ten days of Ramadan seeking Laylat al-Qadr, then in the middle ten, and later in the last ten days. He ﷺ found it in the last ten nights.
The Companions رضي الله عنهم also repeatedly saw in their dreams that Laylat al-Qadr was among the last seven nights of Ramadan. Upon this, the Prophet ﷺ said:

Attaining the Reward:
