Last Two Verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah: Shield Against Shayṭān

The Last Two Verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah – Virtues from the Book by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpuri

📖 Virtues of the Last Two Verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah

➊ Protection and Sufficiency at Night

Narrated by Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 4008; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 807)

“Suffice him”
means:
◈ Protection from the evil of Shayṭān
◈ Shield against unexpected calamities
◈ Sufficient even in place of nightly Tahajjud prayers

💡 Reflect: How deprived are we of such immense benefit?

➋ Two Unique Lights from the Heavens

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with Jibrīl عليه السلام when a creaking sound was heard from above.
Jibrīl said: “A door from the heavens has just opened that has never opened before.”
Then an angel descended, one who had never come down before. He gave the Prophet ﷺ glad tidings:

“Rejoice with two lights granted only to you and never given to any prophet before: al-Fātiḥah and the closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah. Whenever you recite even a letter from them, you will be granted light.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 806)

➌ Unique Gift from Beneath the Throne

Narrated by Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān رضي الله عنه:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“We were given superiority over other nations through three things:
① The entire earth was made a place of prayer for us
② Its dust was made a means of purification
③ Our rows (in prayer) were made like those of the angels
And I was given the closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah from a treasure beneath the Throne. No one before me received them, and no one after me will receive them.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 522)

➍ Revealed from the Treasure Under the Throne

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه:

“The closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah were revealed from a treasure beneath the Throne.”
(Faḍāʾil al-Qurʾān by al-Nasāʾī: 48 – Ṣaḥīḥ isnād)

➎ Given During the Night of Miʿrāj

Narrated by ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رضي الله عنه:

“The Prophet ﷺ was given three gifts during the Miʿrāj:
① The five daily prayers
② The closing verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah
③ Forgiveness for all from his Ummah who do not associate partners with Allah.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 173)

➏ Shield from Shayṭān for Three Nights

Narrated by al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr رضي الله عنه:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah wrote a Book two thousand years before creating the heavens and the earth.
From it, He revealed two verses with which He ended Sūrat al-Baqarah.
Any house in which these verses are recited for three nights—Shayṭān will not come near it.”
(Musnad Aḥmad: 4/274; Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 2882 – Ḥasan)
Authenticated by:
Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, al-Dhahabī

➐ Narration of Maʿādh ibn Jabal and the Captured Shayṭān

Narrated by Abū Aswad al-Duʾalī:

Maʿādh ibn Jabal رضي الله عنه was appointed guardian over the charity of the Muslims. When he noticed the dates were decreasing, the Prophet ﷺ informed him it was a Shayṭān stealing.

Maʿādh captured the Shayṭān, who pleaded for release and promised never to return. But he returned. Upon the third capture, the Shayṭān confessed:

“We (jinn) cannot enter the house of someone who recites the last verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah at night.”
(al-Mawāʿiẓ of Ibn Abī al-Dunyā: 175; Ḥasan isnād)
Authenticated by:
al-Ḥākim, al-Dhahabī

➑ Narration of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb and the Form of a Dog

Narrated by Ubayy ibn Kaʿb رضي الله عنه:

He observed his stored dates were decreasing. One night, he stood guard and saw a creature like a teenage boy. Upon interrogating it, it admitted to being a jinn. He asked:

“How can we protect ourselves from you?”
The jinn replied:
“With Āyat al-Kursī.”
Ubayy told the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ confirmed:
“The wicked one has spoken the truth.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān: 784 – Ḥasan isnād)

✅ Key Lessons:

✔ The last two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah are among the most honored revelations.
✔ They serve as a shield against Shayṭān, especially when recited at night.
✔ They are a treasure from beneath Allah’s Throne – not given to any other Prophet.
Reciting them brings divine light, protection, and forgiveness.

❗ Final Reminder:

Many households are plagued by disturbances—unseen fires, flickering lights, foul smells, voices, or strange objects. These are ploys of Shayṭān and jinn.

And why do they succeed?
Because the remembrance of Allah is absent from these homes.

Rather than running to magicians and charlatans—who loot wealth and faith—turn to authentic Prophetic guidance:

🌙 Recite:

  • Āyat al-Kursī
  • The last two verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah
  • Morning and evening adhkār
  • Daily Qur’ān recitation
