Knowledge, Recognizing the Truth, and the Qualities of an Imam

The Golden Nuggets – شذرات الذهب
Imām Abū al-Muẓaffar al-Samʿānī (رحمه الله) (d. 389 AH) said:


“Indeed, the truth is one, and whatever opposes it is falsehood.”
(Qawāṭiʿ al-Adillah fī al-Uṣūl: 1/2)


Imām Mālik ibn Anas (رحمه الله) said:


“Of the ways knowledge is lost is that you answer everyone who asks you.”
(al-ʿIlal wa Maʿrifat al-Rijāl by Imām Aḥmad: 534, chain ḥasan)


Imām ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī (رحمه الله) said:


“A person cannot be an Imam in knowledge if he relies on odd (shādh) opinions, or narrates from everyone indiscriminately, or narrates everything he hears.”
