✿ Definitions of the Two Types of Hajj
① Hajj Qirān (قران):This is when a pilgrim enters into a state of iḥrām with the intention of performing both ‘Umrah and Hajj together without exiting the state of iḥrām in between. The pilgrim remains in iḥrām until after the rites of Hajj are completed and must offer a sacrificial animal (hady).
② Hajj Tamattuʿ (تمتع):
In this form, a pilgrim performs ‘Umrah first, exits iḥrām after completing its rites (including shaving or shortening the hair), and then enters a new iḥrām for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah. This type also requires a sacrificial animal, and for those who cannot offer one, fasting becomes obligatory.
✿ Hadith Highlights
Sayyiduna ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) narrated:- The Prophet ﷺ performed Hajj al-Qirān during his farewell pilgrimage (Ḥajjat al-Wadāʿ), initiating his iḥrām with ‘Umrah and then adding the intention of Hajj without exiting the first.
- Those who had brought sacrificial animals were told not to exit iḥrām until the sacrifice.
- Those who hadn’t brought an offering were instructed to perform ‘Umrah, then cut their hair and exit iḥrām, and later don a new iḥrām for Hajj (i.e., Tamattuʿ).
- The verse regarding Tamattuʿ was revealed in the Book of Allah.
- The Prophet ﷺ instructed the Companions to perform it.
- No verse was ever revealed to abrogate it, and the Prophet ﷺ never forbade it until his death.
- Someone later expressed an opinion against it—said to be ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه)

✔ Key Lessons from the Hadiths
❖ Both Tamattuʿ and Qirān are valid forms of Hajj.❖ The Prophet ﷺ's instruction to his Companions affirms the legitimacy and preference of Tamattuʿ for those without sacrificial animals.
❖ The claim that Tamattuʿ was later prohibited is not substantiated by any Qur'anic verse or Prophetic statement.
❖ Scholars differ, but the stronger opinion—based on the Prophet’s own commands and practice—is that Tamattuʿ remains permissible and recommended.
