Kaffarah for Breaking an Oath in Islam

Question​

What is the expiation (kaffārah) for an oath?

Answer​

The expiation for an oath is to feed ten poor people according to one’s means, or clothe ten poor people, or free one slave. If one does not have the ability to do any of these three, then fast for three days.

Evidence from the Qur’an​

❀ Allah Almighty says:

﴿فَكَفَّارَتُهُ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَاكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ذَلِكَ كَفَّارَةُ أَيْمَانِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ﴾

Reference: al-Mā’idah: 89

Translation:
“So its expiation is feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. But whoever cannot find (the means), then (he must) fast for three days. That is the expiation for your oaths when you swear.”
