Jinn Do Not Know the Unseen: Qur’an and Hadith Evidence

Jinn Do Not Possess Knowledge of the Unseen – In the Light of Qur’an and Hadith

Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām

❖ Question

Do the jinn possess knowledge of the unseen (ʿilm al-ghayb)?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

  • The jinn do not have knowledge of the unseen.
  • In the heavens and the earth, no one besides Allah possesses the knowledge of the unseen.
  • The Qur’an has given clear texts that explicitly negate the idea that jinn or any other creation has such knowledge.

◈ Evidence from the Qur’an

Allah says:

Translation:
“Then, when We decreed death for him (Sulaymān), nothing indicated to them his death except a creature of the earth that ate his staff. But when he fell down, the jinn realised that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating torment.”
(Sūrah Saba, 34:14)

This verse clearly proves that the jinn do not have knowledge of the unseen. Had they possessed it, they would not have remained in toil and hardship after the death of Sulaymān (ʿalayhis-salām).

◈ Claiming Knowledge of the Unseen is Kufr

  • Whoever claims to possess the knowledge of the unseen is a disbeliever.
  • Likewise, anyone who affirms the truth of such a claimant also becomes a disbeliever.

Allah says:

﴿قُل لا يَعلَمُ مَن فِى السَّمـوتِ وَالأَرضِ الغَيبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ﴾… سورة النمل، آية 65

Translation:
“Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.”
(Sūrah al-Naml, 27:65)

This verse definitively establishes that the knowledge of the unseen belongs exclusively to Allah. Whoever claims it denies Allah’s Oneness and His Attributes.

◈ Soothsayers (Kahins) and Their Fate

  • Those who claim to foretell the future are kahins (soothsayers).
  • Their practice is known as kahānah.
  • The Prophet ﷺ gave a stern warning against it:

«اَنَّ مَنْ اَتٰی عَرَّافًا فَسَأَلَهُ لَمْ تُقْبَلْ لَهُ صَلَاةٌ اَرْبَعِيْنَ يَوْمًا»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Salām, Bāb Taḥrīm al-Kahānah wa Ityān al-Kahhān, Ḥadīth 2230)

Translation:
“Whoever goes to a soothsayer and asks him (about the unseen), his prayers will not be accepted for forty days.”

  • If someone affirms the words of a soothsayer, he becomes a disbeliever, because he has in reality denied the Qur’anic verse:

﴿قُل لا يَعلَمُ مَن فِى السَّمـوتِ وَالأَرضِ الغَيبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ﴾… سورة النمل، آية 65

Translation:
“Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except Allah.”

✅ Conclusion

  • Jinn do not have knowledge of the unseen.
  • Claiming such knowledge is kufr, and affirming such a claim is also kufr.
  • Only Allah alone possesses the knowledge of the unseen.
