"Aisha (رضي الله عنها) narrated: One day, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) came to me and asked, 'Do you have anything (to eat)?' We replied, 'No.' He said, 'Then I am fasting.' On another day, he came to us, and we said, 'O Messenger of Allah, a gift of Hais (a type of date confection) has been presented to us.' He said, 'Show it to me, for I had intended to fast this morning.' Then, he ate it."
[Sahih Muslim 1154:170]
Note:
From this Hadith, it becomes clear that the intention for a voluntary fast can be made after dawn, provided that the person has not consumed anything after the break of dawn.
