📖 Quranic Prohibition on Marrying Polytheists

❀ Allah ﷻ says:

“And do not marry polytheist women until they believe. Indeed, a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she pleases you. And do not marry [your women] to polytheist men until they believe.”

📚 Sūrah al-Baqarah (2:221)

❖ Explanatory Note:

This is a clear and strict command from Allah ﷻ forbidding marriage with polytheists (mushrikīn).

❖ Many Muslims today neglect this divine prohibition and marry their sons or daughters to polytheists without considering its seriousness.

Marrying a Muslim man to a polytheist woman, or a Muslim woman to a polytheist man, is ḥarām (forbidden) in Islam.

◈ Key Points:

The verse provides two separate prohibitions:
— A Muslim man cannot marry a polytheist woman.
— A Muslim woman cannot be given in marriage to a polytheist man.

Faith (īmān) is the foundational requirement in marriage.

Even a believing slave woman is better in the sight of Allah than a wealthy or attractive polytheist woman.

This divine ruling aims to preserve the religion and protect the spiritual future of Muslim families.

Parents must be vigilant and prioritize dīn over worldly appeal when arranging marriages for their children.
