Islamic Rulings and Virtues of Nikah According to Qur'an and Hadith

Written by: Qari Usama bin Abdul Salam حفظه الله

◈ The Importance of Nikah

Narrated by ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Whoever has the means for Nikah should get married."
📘 Sunan Ibn Majah: 1846 | Al-Albani: Sahih, Silsilah al-Sahihah: 2383

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"O young men, those among you who can support a wife should marry, for it restrains eyes and protects private parts. And whoever is not able, should fast, for fasting will diminish his desire."
📘 Sahih Muslim: 1400

📖 Qur’anic Command:
﴿وَأَنْكِحُوا الْأَيَامَى...﴾

"Marry those among you who are single and the righteous among your male and female slaves. If they are poor, Allah will enrich them out of His grace..."
📘 Surah An-Nur: 32-33

📖 Permission for Polygyny:
﴿فَانْكِحُوْا مَا طَابَ لَكُمْ...﴾

"Marry women of your choice, two or three or four..."
📘 Surah An-Nisa: 3

◈ Virtues of Nikah

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"Three are entitled to Allah’s help: the one striving to pay off slavery, the one who marries for chastity, and the one fighting in Allah's cause."
📘 Sunan al-Nasa’i: 3220 | Ibn Majah: 2518 (Hasan)

Abu Umamah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"Whoever marries seeking the pleasure of Allah has completed half of his faith."
📘 Al-I‘tiqad lil-Bayhaqi, p.178

Anas (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"Whoever is granted a righteous wife by Allah, half of his religion is secured. Let him fear Allah regarding the other half."
📘 Al-Mustadrak al-Hakim: 2681

Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported:
"Whoever wants to meet Allah in a state of purity should marry free women."
📘 Ibn Majah: 1862 | Also mentioned in Bukhari’s Tarikh and other references

Warning Against Avoiding Marriage

Narrated by ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Nikah is my Sunnah. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me. Marry, for I will boast of your numbers before other nations."
📘 Sunan Ibn Majah: 1846

Narrated by Anas (رضي الله عنه):
When some companions expressed extreme asceticism (not marrying, not eating meat, etc.), the Prophet ﷺ said:
"I pray and sleep, fast and break fast, and I marry women. Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not from me."
📘 Sahih Muslim: 1401 | Ibn Hibban: 14

Narrated by Samurah (رضي الله عنه):
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade celibacy." Then the following verse was recited:
﴿وَلَقَدْ أَرْ‌سَلْنَا رُ‌سُلًا...﴾
📘 Sunan Ibn Majah: 1849 | Sunan al-Nasa’i: 3215

◈ Clarifying Misconceptions: Marriage Between Hashimis and Non-Hashimis

Some people falsely claim that a Hashimi woman cannot marry a non-Hashimi man. This is incorrect based on:

Sayyidah Zaynab (رضي الله عنها), daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, was married to Abu al-‘As (رضي الله عنه) who was not a Hashimi.

② Two daughters of the Prophet ﷺ, Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum (رضي الله عنهما), were married to Uthman ibn Affan (رضي الله عنه) — not a Hashimi.

Umm Kulthum bint ‘Ali (رضي الله عنها), granddaughter of the Prophet ﷺ, was married to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه) — a non-Hashimi.

④ The Prophet ﷺ married his cousin Zaynab bint Jahsh (رضي الله عنها) to Zayd ibn Harithah (رضي الله عنه), a freed slave — as recorded in Surah al-Ahzab.

‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (Zayn al-‘Abidin) married Shaharbanu, a non-Hashimi woman.

🔹 Note: Neither Qur'an nor Hadith forbids a Hashimi woman from marrying a non-Hashimi man. The real basis for superiority is Taqwa (piety), not lineage.

◈ Types of Nikah

✔ 1. Nikah al-Masnun (Prescribed Marriage):

A marriage performed under a guardian with the intention of lifelong companionship.
📘 Sahih al-Bukhari: 5127

✖ 2. Nikah Shighar (Exchange Marriage / Wata Sata):

A man marries off his daughter or sister on the condition that the other man does the same, often without specifying Mahr. This is haram (forbidden).

📘 Sahih Muslim: 1416 | Sunan al-Nasa’i: 3339

⚠️ Harms of Nikah Shighar:
① Emotional retaliation in case of conflict between either couple.
② Absence of proper Mahr — a practice of the age of ignorance.
③ Even if Mahr is specified, it often doesn't eliminate the retaliatory nature of such arrangements.

📘 Sahih Muslim: 3468
