Question:
What is the ruling on wine (intoxicants) in the light of ḥadīth?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Answer:
Wine (khamr) and every intoxicating substance are ḥarām. There is no difference between a small or large amount. Whoever considers wine ḥalāl becomes a disbeliever (kāfir), and whoever drinks it without considering it ḥalāl is a fāsiq (open sinner).
Scholarly Consensus:
“The prohibition of wine, in small and large quantities, is from the necessities of religion, and consensus is established upon it. Whoever drinks it considering it ḥalāl is a disbeliever, and whoever drinks it without such belief is a fāsiq.”
(al-Tawḍīḥ, 27/20)

- Wine and all intoxicants are strictly forbidden.
- Small or large quantity makes no difference.
- Believing it to be ḥalāl = kufr.
- Drinking it while knowing it is ḥarām = fisq (major sin).
