Islamic Ruling on Wearing Black Clothes in Muharram and Beyond​

Question​

Can a Salafi ‘aqeedah follower wear black clothes during the month of Muharram and in other months?

Answer​

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ، وَٱلصَّلَاةُ وَٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ، أَمَّا بَعْدُ

Avoiding Black Clothes in Muharram​

It is better to refrain from wearing black clothes during the month of Muharram al-Haram, because doing so resembles the practice of the Rafidah (Shia sect). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

«من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم»
"Whoever imitates a people is from among them."
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 4031 – Hasan Hadith)

Wearing Black Clothes in Ordinary Days​

It should be remembered that wearing black clothes in itself is permissible. Therefore, outside of Muharram, wearing black is allowed and there is no prohibition in it.

Misconception About Black Clothes and the People of Hellfire​

Among the general public, there is a widespread belief that black clothing is the dress of the people of Hellfire. However, this claim is baseless and unfounded, having no proof in any authentic hadith.
