Question

What is the ruling on wearing an iron ring?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ Wearing an iron ring is permissible. There is no authentic evidence establishing prohibition (ḥurmah) or disliking (karāhah). All narrations reported on its prohibition are weak and unauthentic.

❀ The Prophet ﷺ said to a Companion regarding the dowry:

اذهب فالتمس ولو خاتما من حديد.
“Go and seek something, even if only an iron ring.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5871)

❀ In another narration:

تزوج ، ولو خاتما من حديد.
“Marry, even if with a dowry of an iron ring.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5150)

Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (RA) (463 AH):

“This ḥadīth is evidence that wearing an iron ring is permissible.”
(al-Istidhkār 5/407)

Imām al-Nawawī (RA) (676 AH):

“The preferred view is that it is not disliked, based on these two aḥādīth.”
(al-Majmūʿ 4/341)
