Islamic Ruling on Watching Football Matches

Author: Dr. Muhammad Zia-ur-Rahman Azmi (رحمہ اللہ)

Football Matches Involving Monetary or Material Rewards:

Football matches that are based on monetary compensation, prizes, or similar incentives are haram because they involve an element of gambling (qimar). According to Shariah, compensation-based competitions are only permissible in three cases: horse racing, camel racing, and archery.

Therefore, attending such matches or watching them is forbidden for anyone aware that they involve compensation or gambling, as attending implies endorsement and approval of such activities.

Football Matches Without Compensation:

However, if the match does not involve any form of compensation or gambling, and it does not lead to neglect of obligatory acts like prayer or involve any prohibited activities, such as:
  • Exposure of the awrah (parts of the body that must be covered),
  • Free mixing of men and women, or
  • Use of musical instruments (alat-e-lahw),
Then, both organizing and watching such matches are permissible.
