Ruling on Eating and Drinking from Gold and Silver Utensils

Imran Ayyub Lahori

Prohibition for Muslims

It is not permissible for Muslims to eat or drink from utensils made of gold or silver. The proofs for this are as follows:

Umm Salamah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
الذى يشرب فى آنية الفضة إنما يجرجر فى بطنه نار جهنم
"The one who drinks from silver utensils is only filling his belly with the fire of Hell."
📚 Bukhari: 5633, Kitāb al-Ashriba: Bāb Āniyat al-Fiḍḍah

❷ In the narration of Sahih Muslim, it is stated:
إن الذى يأكل أو يشرب فى آنية الذهب والفضة إنما يجر جر فى بطنه نار جهنم
"Indeed, the one who eats or drinks from gold and silver utensils is only filling his belly with the fire of Hell."
📚 Muslim: 2065, Kitāb al-Libās wa al-Zīnah: Bāb Taḥrīm Istiʿmāl Āniyat al-Dhahab wa al-Fiḍḍah fī al-Shurb

Hudhayfah (RA) said:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
لا تلبسوا الحرير ولا الديباج لا تشربوا فى آنية الذهب والفضة ولا تأكلوا فى صحافها فإنها لهم فى الدنيا ولكم فى الآخرة
"Do not wear silk or brocade. Do not drink from gold and silver vessels, and do not eat from their plates. Indeed, these are for them (the disbelievers) in this world, and for you in the Hereafter."
📚 Bukhari: 5633; Muslim: 2067

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
من لبس الحرير فى الدنيا لم يلبسه فى آخرة ومن شرب الخمر فى الدنيا لم يشربه فى الآخرة ومن شرب فى آنية الذهب والفضة لم يشرب بها فى الآخرة
"Whoever wears silk in this world will not wear it in the Hereafter. Whoever drinks wine in this world will not drink it in the Hereafter. And whoever drinks from gold and silver vessels in this world will not drink from them in the Hereafter."
📚 Sahih al-Targhīb: 2112, Kitāb al-Ṭaʿām: Bāb al-Tarhīb min Istiʿmāl Āniyat al-Dhahab; Al-Ḥākim: 4/141 — Imam al-Ḥākim declared its chain authentic.
