❖ Shar‘i Explanation of Tattooing (Gondna) and Being Tattooed (Gondwana) in Light of Hadith ❖

It is mentioned in a Hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the one who tattoos and the one who gets tattooed.
What is meant by “gondna” (tattooing) and “gondwana” (being tattooed)?
Please provide a Shar‘i explanation.
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد:
◈ The act of inserting color or pigment (such as antimony or ink) into the skin of the arms, legs, face, gums, or any other part of the body is known in Islamic terminology as "washm" (وشم) — i.e., tattooing.
◈ This practice is strictly prohibited in Shari‘ah.
It is from among the actions that the Prophet ﷺ explicitly cursed, and hence, it is considered a major sin.
هٰذَا مَا عِندِي وَاللّٰهُ أَعْلَمُ بِالصَّوَابِ
This is what I know; and Allah knows best what is correct.
