Islamic Ruling on Regifting: Permissibility and Practice of Sahabah

🎁 Ruling on Gifting Something That Was Received as a Gift
✍️ Derived from: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❖ Question:

Is it permissible to give something received as a gift to someone else as a gift?

❖ Shar‘i Ruling:

✅ Yes, it is completely permissible to gift an item that was received as a gift.
There is no prohibition in Shari‘ah regarding this practice.

❖ Reasoning:

Once a gift is given, it becomes the property of the recipient.
The recipient has full discretion over how to use or dispose of it:

✔ They may keep it.
✔ They may gift it to someone else.
✔ They may sell it or use it in any lawful manner.

❖ Practice of the Companions (Sahabah)

This practice is supported by examples from the lives of the Sahabah:

◈ It is narrated that a Companion (RA) gave the head of a goat as a gift.
◈ The recipient gifted it to another person, who in turn gifted it to someone else.
◈ This process continued until the same goat’s head returned to the original giver.

This highlights the permissibility and common acceptance of this practice among the early Muslims.

❖ Summary:

✔ It is permissible and in accordance with Islamic principles to gift an item that was received as a gift.
✔ There is no sin or objection in doing so.
✔ The practice is well established in the Sunnah of the Companions.
