Furthermore, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"Do not turn your houses into graveyards, for indeed, Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited."
[Sahih Muslim, Book of Prayer for Travelers, Hadith No. 780]
This Hadith clarifies that Surah Al-Baqarah should be recited in homes, not in graveyards.
Additionally, another Hadith states:
"Pray in your homes and do not turn them into graveyards."
[Sahih Muslim, Book of Prayer for Travelers, Hadith No. 777]
From these Hadiths, it is evident that just as prayers (Salah) cannot be performed in graveyards, recitation of the Qur’an is also not prescribed at graves. Therefore, the practice of Qur’an recitation at graves, which is commonly observed today, has no basis in Islam and should be avoided.
Question:
Is there any authentic Hadith that proves the permissibility of reciting the Qur’an at the grave?Answer:
Reciting the Qur’an at the grave after burial is not proven by any authentic Hadith. For instance, Sayyidah Aisha (رضي الله عنها) once asked the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) what should be said for the deceased in the graveyard, and the Prophet (ﷺ) only taught her a supplication. There was no mention of reciting the Qur’an at the grave.Furthermore, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
