Question:

During congregational prayer, if a person is alone in the last row and prays a few Rakʿahs — or the entire prayer — in that position, will their prayer be valid? Please answer in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd:

1. The Ruling Without Excuse

If someone, without a valid Sharʿi excuse, prays while standing alone in a row, their prayer will not be considered valid.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ explicitly said:

لَا صَلَاةَ لِفَرْدٍ خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ
(Sahih Ibn Hibban: 2203)
“There is no prayer for the one who stands alone behind the row.”

This Hadith clearly states that in congregational prayer, standing alone in a row without an excuse is impermissible, and in such a case, the prayer is incomplete or invalid.

2. The Ruling With a Valid Excuse

If a person cannot find space in the row or, due to some reason, cannot join the row, they are permitted to pray alone in the last row.

This follows the same principle as in the matter of Wudu, where the Prophet ﷺ said:

لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَا وُضُوءَ لَهُ
(Abu Dawud 101, Ibn Majah 399)
“There is no prayer for the one who does not have Wudu.”

However, if someone is unable to perform Wudu, they may do Tayammum and their prayer will be valid.
The same principle applies here — if joining the row is not possible, praying alone in the back row is permissible and valid.

3. The General Instruction of the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ said:

إِذَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِأَمْرٍ فَأْتُوا مِنْهُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
(Bukhari 7288, Muslim 1337)
“When I command you to do something, do as much of it as you can.”

This foundational Hadith shows that the Shariʿah only obligates a person to act according to their ability.
Therefore, if it is not possible to join the row, one should pray alone to the best of their ability, and the prayer will be accepted.
