❖ Question

Sometimes, when we go to the mosque for Salah, the rows are already complete and there is no space in front. In such a situation, can a person stand alone behind the row and pray? Will his Salah be valid?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, as reported in Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, and other books of ḥadīth:

«مَنْ صَلّٰی خَلْفَ الصَّفِّ وَحْدَہٗ فَلْیُعِدْ صَلاَتَہٗ»
"Whoever prays alone behind the row should repeat his Salah."

In some narrations, the wording is:
«فَلاَ صَلاَۃَ لَہُ»
"His prayer is not valid."

Therefore, regarding the issue you mentioned:

✿ If a person comes to the mosque and the rows are complete with no space in front, and he prays alone behind the row:

If later another person joins him, then the prayer is correct.
If no one joins him and he has prayed some rakʿāt alone, then he must repeat those rakʿāt with the Imam.
✔ He should not end the prayer with the Imam’s salām but rather repeat the rakʿāt that were performed alone.

The narration about pulling someone from the row to stand behind is weak. Moreover, this act contradicts the ḥadīth:

«أَلاَ تَصُفُّوْنَ کَمَا تَصُفُّ الْمَلاَئِکَةُ»
"Will you not form rows as the angels form rows?"
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Bāb al-Amr bi al-Sukūn fī al-Ṣalāh; Sunan al-Nasā’ī, Kitāb al-Imāmah, Bāb Ḥath al-Imām ʿalā Raṣṣ al-Ṣufūf, Vol. 1, p. 93)

It is also incorrect to make qiyās (analogy) of this case with other situations such as:

✿ When there are only two men in congregation and one stands next to the Imam.
✿ When a woman stands alone behind the men’s row.

This analogy is invalid because:

«وَالْقِیَاسُ فِی مُقَابَلَة النَّصِّ لاَ یَصِحُّ»
"Qiyās in opposition to an explicit text is not valid."

"ھذا ما عندي والله أعلم بالصواب"
