Islamic Ruling on Playing or Watching Games – Detailed Explanation

Source: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah (Tawḍīḥ al-Aḥkām), Vol. 2, p. 508

Question:

Is it completely ḥarām to play a game, watch it, listen to it on the radio, or view it on TV? Or can some forms of it be permissible?

Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

The authority to declare something ḥarām or ḥalāl belongs solely to Allāh Taʿālā. The responsibility of human beings is only to convey the commands of Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ correctly to others.

In matters where there is no explicit and clear textual evidence, rulings are derived in the light of the generality of the texts, and a temporary or situational decision is made according to specific circumstances.

والعلم عند الله عز وجل – Ultimate knowledge rests with Allāh alone.

In Light of a Previous Fatwa:

Games that are frivolous or have harmful effects have been declared impermissible and prohibited to watch.
