Islamic Ruling on Minimum and Maximum Duration of Menstruation

Islamic Limit for Menstrual Days: Is There a Minimum or Maximum Duration?

Source: Fatawa Arkan al-Islam

❖ Question

Is there a known minimum and maximum number of days for menstruation in Islamic law?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

According to the correct and stronger opinion, there is no fixed Shar‘i limit for the minimum or maximum number of menstrual days.

❖ Evidence from the Qur’an

[Sūrat al-Baqarah: 222]
“And they ask you concerning menstruation. Say: It is an impurity, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they become pure.”

❖ Shar‘i Understanding from the Verse

  • Allah ﷻ did not set a specific number of days for avoiding women; rather, He made purity (ṭuhr) the basis for ending this ruling.
  • This makes it clear that the cause for the ruling is the presence of menstruation.

✿ When menstruation is present, the Shar‘i rulings apply.
✿ Once the woman attains purity, the specific rulings of menstruation cease.

❖ No Numerical Restriction in Qur’an or Sunnah

Neither the Qur’an nor the Sunnah sets a specific minimum or maximum number of menstrual days. If it were required in Sharīʿah, Allah ﷻ or the Prophet ﷺ would have mentioned it.

❖ Shar‘i Principle

  • Any blood that women generally recognize as menstrual blood will be treated as ḥayḍ, regardless of the number of days.
  • There is no fixed day count for its validity.
  • If the bleeding is continuous, without stopping, or stops only for one or two days in the month, then it is considered istiḥāḍah (non-menstrual bleeding due to illness).
