Question
What is the ruling on keeping a TV at home, and does living in such an environment make one fall under the hadiths about immodesty and lack of honor?
Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
✿ The presence of television in the home, which often shows immodest and impermissible content, is indeed a source of fitnah and shamelessness.
✿ Your responsibility is to keep advising your family with wisdom, patience, and kindness. You are not sinful for what they insist on doing, as long as you have made your stance clear.
✿ Keep striving with duʿāʾ and sincere reminders. Allah will open a way out, inshā’Allāh.
Merely living in the house does not make you guilty of their actions. Your duty is to advise and stay away from watching such content. Separation from the home is not obligatory, but maintaining patience and continuous advice is the correct path.
