◈ Introduction
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā baʿd!
In Islam, the protection of a Muslim’s life, wealth, honor, and dignity is among the fundamental teachings of the Sharīʿah. Once a person enters the fold of Islam, his honor and respect become sanctified by Islamic law, and no Muslim is allowed to harm his life, wealth, or dignity.
◈ Sanctity of a Muslim in Islam
❖ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Ḥurmat māl al-muslim ka-ḥurmat damih"
“The sanctity of a Muslim’s wealth is like the sanctity of his blood.”
(Musnad al-Shihāb: 177)
❖ In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Al-muslim akhū al-muslim, lā yaẓlimuh, wa lā yakhzulluh, wa lā yaḥqiruh… al-taqwá hāhunā"
“A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim: he neither oppresses him, nor forsakes him, nor despises him. Taqwá is here.”
(Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn: 271)
These teachings emphasize that a Muslim's dignity must not be violated under any circumstance.
◈ Status of Belittling a Muslim in Sharīʿah
❖ Islam has greatly emphasized the honor and respect of fellow Muslims.
❖ Disparaging or belittling another Muslim is clearly forbidden.
❖ Insulting the Prophets is a crime that renders one an apostate and makes him liable to capital punishment.
❖ However, insulting a Muslim who is not a Prophet does not amount to apostasy, nor does it carry the death penalty—but it remains a sinful and forbidden act.
◈ Sharīʿah Ruling on Insulting the Four Imams
The Four Great Imams —
➤ Imām Abū Ḥanīfah رحمه الله,
➤ Imām Mālik رحمه الله,
➤ Imām al-Shāfiʿī رحمه الله,
➤ Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal رحمه الله —
are noble and highly esteemed personalities in the history of Islam, and the entire Ummah takes pride in their legacy.
❖ Insulting or reviling them is a far graver and more despicable act than insulting an ordinary Muslim.
Why is this so?
➤ Because such disrespect does not harm one individual, but causes pain and offense to the entire body of believers who revere and follow these Imams.
◈ Ruling on One Who Insults the Four Imams
❖ If someone insults or belittles any of the Four Imams:
➤ He does not become an apostate (murtad), nor is he liable for capital punishment.
➤ However, he is guilty of a ḥarām (prohibited) act.
➤ If an Islamic government exists, it may impose a disciplinary punishment (taʿzīr) upon such a person to:
▪ Protect the society from the evil of his speech
▪ Prevent others from engaging in similarly offensive behavior
✔ Summary
➊ Insulting the Four Imams is ḥarām in Sharīʿah.
➋ Such a person is subject to disciplinary punishment from an Islamic state.
➌ The purpose of this punishment is to protect society from corruption, discord, and disrespect for Islamic scholars.
