Islamic Ruling on Husband Suckling Breast Milk During Intimacy

Source: Fatāwā ʿUlamāʾ-e-Ahl-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, Volume 1

❖ Question:

Is it permissible for a husband to kiss or suck his wife’s breasts during intimacy? And what is the Islamic ruling if some milk enters his mouth during this act?

❖ Answer:

It is permissible for a husband to suck his wife’s breasts during intimacy, and if some milk enters his mouth, there is no sin in it, and no expiation (kaffārah) is required.

❖ Sharīʿah Principle of Riḍāʿah (Breastfeeding) and Prohibition:

Riḍāʿah (nursing) which leads to maḥramiyyah (prohibitive relations) is only established by breastfeeding a non-maḥram, but Sharīʿah has prescribed specific conditions for this:
These include:
The amount of milk intake
The age of the nursling

ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها)
said:
❝ كان فيما أنزل القرآن عشر رضعات معلومات يحرمن ثم نسخن بخمس معلومات ❞
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Raḍāʿ: 1452)
"The Qur’ān initially prescribed ten known sucklings to establish prohibition of marriage, later abrogated to five known sucklings."

In another narration from ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها):
❝ لا تحرم المصة ولا المصتان ❞
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Raḍāʿ: 1450)
"One or two sucklings do not establish prohibition (maḥramiyyah).”

Umm Salamah (رضي الله عنها) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:
❝ Only that suckling establishes prohibition which nourishes the intestines and occurs within the nursing period. ❞
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1152)

Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) narrates:
❝ لا رضاع إلا في الحولين ❞
(Muṣannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq: 3/1390)
"There is no valid breastfeeding (that establishes prohibition) except within the first two years."

These aḥādīth clearly indicate that for riḍāʿah to result in prohibition, the following conditions must be met:
✔ The child must be under two years of age
✔ There must be five complete feedings that fill the stomach

❖ Ruling for the Husband:

Based on the situation described in the question, if during intimacy a small amount of milk enters the husband's mouth, it does not establish riḍāʿah, since the conditions for it are not fulfilled.

Thus, no prohibition or marital restriction arises from the act, and no sin is committed.

✔ Conclusion:
The husband's act of suckling from his wife during intimacy is permissible, and occasional intake of milk in such context does not establish riḍāʿah or prohibition.
