Scholarly Difference of Opinion
Scholars have differed regarding the permissibility of hunting with a gun:
- Majority view: Hunting done with a gun or a stone is haram, except for a few scholars who allowed it.
- Notable early scholars who disliked gun hunting: ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما, Sālim, al-Qāsim, Mujāhid, Ibrāhīm, ʿAṭāʾ, and al-Ḥasan رحمهم الله.

Preferred Opinion (Rājiḥ)
Hunting with a modern gun is halal, because:
- The bullet does not strike like a stick or club; rather, it penetrates the body like an arrow, spear, nail, or other sharp instrument.
- The narrations prohibiting gun hunting refer to old-style clay bullets, which killed like a blunt blow (similar to mauqūdhah) without cutting.
