Question

What is the ruling on hunting pigs?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

✿ The pig is najis al-ʿayn (intrinsically impure). It is not permissible to benefit from any part of it; therefore, its hunting is also impermissible.

❀ ʿAllāmah al-ʿAynī al-Ḥanafī (RA) (d. 855 AH) said:

إن الاصطياد به لا يجوز بالإجماع ، لنجاسة عينه.
“Hunting pigs is unanimously impermissible, because it is intrinsically impure.”
(Minḥat al-Sālik, p. 367)

✿ However, if pigs cause harm to crops or other property, then they may be killed to prevent harm.
