Shari‘ah Ruling on Giving a Gift to One Child in Return for Personal Service
✒ Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
It is permissible for a father to give a gift or payment to one of his children in return for personal service or care, without it being considered unjust favoritism over the other siblings.
✔ The gift or payment must be equal to the value of the service rendered.
✔ It may be given:
• Daily,
• Monthly, or
• Annually — depending on the arrangement.
✔ The intent should be compensation for service, not favoritism.
Thus, such a gift is viewed as wages or recompense for work or caregiving, not a preferential reward among siblings.
