Islamic Ruling on Gender Mixing and Handshakes in Hospitals

❀ Gender Mixing in Hospitals: Islamic Ruling ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book 500 Questions and Answers for Women, based on the Fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain. The translation was done by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

I work in a hospital in a role that requires constant interaction and communication with non-mahram women. What is the ruling on such interaction? And particularly in Ramadan, what is the ruling on shaking hands with non-mahram women?

❖ Answer:

Mixing with women is impermissible and extremely dangerous, especially when they are adorned with makeup and are not observing proper hijab. Therefore, it is necessary for you to avoid such interaction. You should seek employment in a field that does not involve mixing with women. Al-ḥamdu lillāh, there are numerous jobs available.

It is haram for a man to shake hands with a non-mahram woman, as this act leads to temptation and arouses desires. The Prophet ﷺ never touched the hand of any non-mahram woman. He used to accept their pledges of allegiance only through speech.
