❖ Question

Is it permissible to eat with non-Muslims (Jews, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Shias, etc.) at a gathering or function, whether from the same utensils or from separate ones?

❖ Answer

◈ Forms of Relations with Non-Muslims

There are different kinds of relations among people. If a Muslim establishes bonds of love, brotherhood, and close friendship with a disbeliever, this is impermissible (haram). Such relations are not only unlawful but, in some cases, may even lead to kufr.

Allah ﷻ says:

"You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers, their sons, their brothers, or their kindred. For such He has inscribed faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with a Spirit from Him. And He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. They are the Party of Allah; indeed, it is the Party of Allah that will be successful."

There are many more Qur’anic and Hadith texts on this subject.

◈ Permissible Relations

If relations are limited to lawful dealings such as:

✿ Buying and selling of halal items,
✿ Accepting invitations to halal food,
✿ Exchanging permissible gifts,

and as long as these do not negatively affect the Muslim’s faith, religion, or character, then such interactions are permissible (mubah).

◈ Eating Food Offered by Non-Muslims

If a disbeliever offers halal food and drink, it is permissible to consume it—even in the same utensils in which wine or pork was previously used—on the condition that:

✿ The utensils are thoroughly washed and purified,
✿ All traces of impurity and unlawful substances are completely removed.

◈ Reward for Accepting Invitations

When there is no Shari‘ah-based objection to accepting a non-Muslim’s invitation, and if doing so may help maintain good relations or serve as a means of da‘wah (inviting to Islam), then it is better to accept such an invitation. This act will, in fact, bring reward from Allah ﷻ.
