What do the scholars of Islam say regarding the practice of wearing garlands at weddings and eating or drinking while standing? If someone eats while standing due to space constraints or another necessity, what is the ruling? And is it permissible to attend such programs?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾAmma baʿd!
◈ Eating or drinking while standing, whether at a wedding or any other occasion, is contrary to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
◈ One who eats or drinks while standing is in effect abandoning the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
◈ Some people cite lack of space or other constraints as excuses, but such excuses are baseless and unnecessary.
◈ Attending events where people are fed while standing is essentially encouraging those who neglect the Sunnah.
◈ Likewise, wearing garlands of flowers or currency, singing songs, or wearing Sehra (wedding headgear) in wedding functions has no basis in the practices of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
◈ All such practices are borrowed from non-Muslim customs and traditions.
❀ May Allah ﷻ grant us the ability to live our lives in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah. Āmīn Yā Rabb al-‘Ālamīn.
