Question:
What is the ruling on eating rabbit meat?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Answer:
Rabbit meat is ḥalāl by consensus.
Prophetic Evidence:
❀ Anas ibn Mālik رضي الله عنه reported:
مررنا فاستنفجنا أرنبا بمر الظهران... فأتيت بها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقبله
“We passed by Marr al-Ẓahrān and flushed out a rabbit. The people chased it but became tired. Then I (Anas) chased it until I caught it and brought it to Abū Ṭalḥah رضي الله عنه, who slaughtered it. He sent its shoulders and thighs to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I brought them to the Prophet ﷺ, and he accepted them.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 5535, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 1953)
Scholarly Consensus:
❀ ʿAllāmah Amīr al-Ṣanʿānī رحمه الله (1182 AH):
الإجماع واقع على حل أكلها
“Consensus has been established on the permissibility of eating rabbit meat.”
(Subul al-Salām, 2/510)

Eating rabbit meat is permissible (ḥalāl) according to Qur’an, Sunnah, and consensus of scholars.
