Islamic Ruling on Cursing All Deviant Sects – A Balanced View

⚖ Islamic Ruling on Cursing All Sects – A Shar‘i Clarification
Answered by: Al-ʿĀlim Faḥd Anṣārī ḥafiẓahullāh

❓ Question:

What is the ruling on saying: “I curse all sects”?

📜 Answer:

Cursing and taunting are not characteristics of a true believer, as clearly stated by the Prophet ﷺ.

📖 Evidence from Hadith:

Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"لَيْسَ الْمُؤْمِنُ بِالطَّعَّانِ، وَلَا اللَّعَّانِ، وَلَا الْفَاحِشِ، وَلَا الْبَذِيءِ"
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī: 1977)

“A believer is not one who taunts, curses, speaks obscenely, or uses foul language.”

📌 Principles Regarding Laʿnah (Cursing) in Islam

✔ It is permissible to generally curse those deeds and actions upon which the Qur'an and Sunnah have explicitly pronounced curse,
✘ But it must be without targeting a specific individual or group.

🛑 Cursing All Sects – A Wrong Approach

✘ Cursing entire sects or groups is not encouraged in Sharīʿah.
✔ Instead, one should:

➤ Identify and refute false beliefs and practices,
➤ Encourage people to avoid innovations and misguidance,
➤ Promote the correct understanding of Islamic teachings.

✅ Conclusion

✔ A true believer avoids cursing and taunting.
✔ However, it is permissible to curse sinful actions in general, if the Qur'an and Hadith have cursed such deeds —
without naming or targeting a particular person or group.
