Islamic Ruling on One Who Conceals His Faith
Author: Imran Ayub Lahori
❖ The Ruling
A person who conceals his faith for some reason is not to be executed if discovered.
Evidence:
The Qur’an refers to a believer from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith:
﴿وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مُّؤْمِنٌ مِّنْ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ يَكْتُمُ إِيمَانَهُ﴾
"And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh, who was concealing his faith, said…"
[al-Mu’min: 28]
Here, Allah honored him with the title of Mu’min (believer) despite his concealment.
❖ Conclusion
- Concealing faith (kitmān al-īmān) due to valid reasons is not a crime warranting execution.
- The Qur’an itself affirms the status of belief for such a person.
- Therefore, if someone is found to be hiding their faith, they are still regarded as a believer and spared from punishment.
