❖ Question:
Is it permissible to celebrate birthdays in Islam? What is the ruling on attending such events and eating the food served there?
❖ Answer by Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir ḥafiẓahullāh:
① Ruling on Celebrating Birthdays:
- This practice is derived from non-Muslim cultures and religious traditions.
- It does not originate from the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions, or the pious predecessors.
- Therefore, it is considered a non-Islamic custom that Muslims should avoid adopting or imitating.
② Attending Birthday Parties and Maintaining Relations:
✔ While avoiding participation in such events is the better option,
- Do not sever relations harshly with relatives.
- Instead, use wisdom and gentle speech to politely excuse yourself.
- Offer an alternative means of showing affection, such as visiting on another day or sending a gift not tied to the birthday.
③ Ruling on Consuming Food at Birthday Events:
⚠ Eating from birthday gatherings is not inherently ḥarām, as the food itself is not impure.
However:
- Refraining from eating in such settings is preferable,
- to avoid giving silent approval or indirect support to the practice of birthdays.
❖ Summary:
✔ Birthday celebrations are not permissible in Islam due to their non-Islamic origins.
✔ Avoid attending such events, but maintain family ties through wisdom and kindness.
✔ While the food is not ḥarām, it is better to abstain for the sake of religious integrity and discouraging un-Islamic practices.
