Ruling on Re-Purchasing a Gift in Islamic Law
✒ Fatwa by the Saudi Permanent Committee for Islamic Rulings
It is not permissible for a person who has given a gift to buy back the same gift from the one to whom it was given.
Narration of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (رضي الله عنه):
He said:
I gave a horse in the path of Allah to someone, but he neglected it. I thought he would sell it cheaply, so I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it.
He ﷺ said:
❝Do not buy it, even if he offers it to you for one dirham. Verily, the one who returns to his charity is like the dog who returns to its vomit.❞
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2623, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1620/1]
A person should not repurchase a gift they have already given — even at a low price — as this act resembles regression in charity and has been severely condemned in authentic narrations.
